Search Engine Advice:

Create value for your site visitor

While search engine spiders are crawling your website looking for terms, their mission is to use the search engine algorithm and your website content to create a value for your site relating to terms or groups of terms.

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid!

The algorithms are complicated computer "formulas" that some search engine "geeks" think they are able to crack over time. I have my doubts about that. Even if they can, the algorithms will change, and then they start over. And, you and I will not waste our time and effort to :"break the code.". So simplify the situation. What is Google trying to do? They want users to come back to their search engine. How do they get them to do that? Satisfy the user of the search engine.

Avoid billboard websites

The mission of most companies with websites is to get the user to do business with them. So they put up a ten page "billboard" website. "We sell this," "We provide that," "Get a discount if you buy today." The user will more than likely take a look at this site and never return. The site has no value to them unless they are there specifically to buy. Search engines are learning how to determine if a site has value or is just an advertisement. And they don't want to give advertisements a high ranking. They want to get paid to place those websites in the pay per view sections. So their ranks won't be very high.

Put some extra "value" in your website

So, trash the "billboard" concept and create some value in your website. What is your area of expertise? Let's say you are in the business of selling safes. You know, the things you lock all your valuables in. OK, I hear you already, "How can my website do anything but sell safes?" Easy, provide something the user wants to see on a regular basis. Something that will make him or her come back to the site.

If you sell safes, then you probably know a lot about them. You probably have had some neat experiences with them. You probably have some funny stories about your ventures. Create a page on your website to tell about "This Month's Lockup." It'll go something like this: "John Doe (names should be changed to protect the innocent) locked his girl friends cat in his safe. He said it was by accident, but he didn't fool her. So he called us at 'Super Safe Services' and we rescued the cat. But we were unable to rescue John. As we were leaving the scene of the 'accident' John's girlfriend was packing HIS bags."

The search engines see this as a continuation of information coming from your website. They see value in it. And that will improve the rank in the search engines.

And this could generate some local traffic to your website. Over time people will be talking about your Lockup stories and trying to guess what the real name of the perpetrator was. Give it a try. If you don't have confidence in your writing abilities, get someone to write the story for you. You can even call me (704-438-2910). I have a writer who will simply interview you and then write the story (for a small fee, of course). You might even have some fun while you are doing it.
