Search Engine Advice:
Use header tags to add emphasis to portions of text
Header tags in your HTML code tell the search engine spiders what words are emphasized. Header tags communicate various levels of importance of specified areas of the website text. In most cases that text is used as a headline on the web page.
Header tag levels
Header tags are arranged into six levels. The html header tag code for the most important text is <h1>text to be emphasized</h1> . There are six levels of header tags. They run from <h1> to <h6>, most important to least important. The major topic will typically carry the <h1> tag, the next level or subtopic will carry the <h2> tag and so on.
Header tags can change the look of your text
Header tags will make your text size vary. The more important tags <h1> will be the largest and the size will progress down with the level of the tag to <h6>.

Sometime you will not like the look of the text that results from the use of the header tags. The text can be changed by using cascading style sheets (CSS). CSS will override header tags for the size and fonts of the text shown on the web page. You can look at the code on this page and see how the tags tie in with the text that is displayed.
While header tags are not a major factor in search engine ranking, they do pull some weight. And they provide a visual emphasis on important portions of text.
