Search Engine Advice:

Focus on specific search terms

A common error made by site builders when they attempt to improve their rank in the search engines is to target too many search terms per page. So you may need to consider narrowing the focus of your individual web pages.

In the past, site builders were cramming all the information they could into their pages so they could get ranked for a lot of word combinations. Years ago, when meta tags were of greater value than they are today, site builders would put tons of keywords in their meta data. This created searches that were taking users to sites they didn't want to go to. It didn't take long for the search engines to solve this problem. But, even today some people think that more is better.

Search engine rankings for more terms require more pages, not more page

Rather than overload a web page with information, consider breaking it down into more pages. If you run a security business, don't over simplify your services by just creating a commercial page and a residential page for your website. Think about who your customers are. How broad is the security market? What are your specialties in the market? Focus your web pages on those specialties.

"Security" is a broad subject. Some businesses provide body guards. Others sell and install lock sets. Others write encryption software to keep Internet data secure. I'd be willing to bet there are few, if any, businesses that cover all three sectors of the industry that I just mentioned above. So don't focus on search terms such as "security." If you sell lock sets then focus on phrases like "residential lock sets," "commercial lock sets," or "industrial door security systems."

The searchers get lost too

When the searcher looking for the lockset types in "security," he is then inundated with websites giving him information that he is not looking for. So what does he do? He focuses his search. The question for the site builder becomes, "What will the searcher type in next?"

Focus is the key. Find your niche and focus on it.

Proper placement in the search engines is very lucrative for many people. If this site has helped you generated income then buy me a drink, or buy me lunch or pay for a night out ballroom dancing. Anything is greatly appreciated.

Has this website help your rankings? If so, then email me and tell me about it. I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Huck
